Full Description

An archaeological desktop and walkover survey were undertaken by Historic Assynt in 2015 in an area of proposed woodland expansion in Glencanisp, Lochinver, Sutherland.

Site 9: FCS category B. This previously unrecorded small farmstead lies almost due south of Achaid a'Braghaid (site 4) and was probably once associated with it. It lies on a low terrace above the more marshy ground close to the Abhainn Bad na h'Achlaise and is protected to the east by a higher ridge. It appears to be a farmstead with a house and two smaller structures beside a south facing, irregular shaped enclosure (kale yard?) approx 19 m square at its largest extent. The house is very small at 6.6 x 2.5m and one of the smaller structures is built against the northern dyke of the kale yard. The site may be a very poor late eighteenth century property or alternatively, since it is not on Home's 1774 survey maps, it could both pre-date and have been abandoned by the time of his survey.

Site 10: FCS category B; A single building 6.40 x 2.5m long with a small additional structure at the southern end, this site is probably an outbuilding associated with site 9, although it could be another small house. <1>
