Full Description
A rapid walk-over archaeological survey was carried out in 1999 by J. Wordsworth as part of the preparation for a WGS application at Clune Wood. Site 2: A turf bank up to 1m high but generally no more than 0.5m high defines an enclosure around the mill pond at Site 3 (see MHG38110). Portions of this dyke, notably on the W and the SE, are of drystone construction and quarry pits adjacent to the wall suggest that construction depended on materials immediately available. The S side is obscured by the mill pond and it is not clear if this enclosure is contemporary with the dam or predates it. There is some heather growing within the enclosure but there is generally more grass and bracken than in the surrounding area, suggesting this has been enriched. There was no evidence of cultivation and this was almost certainly a stock enclosure. <1>
The feature is partly visible in vertical aerial photography and mostly visible in Scottish Gov/SEPA LiDAR data. An additional dyke, not previously recorded, but visible in the LiDAR appears to link this dyked enclosure with that around a possible farmstead to the west (see MHG30039 and MHG38112). <2> <3>
The site was visited and recorded during a walkover survey by West Coast Archaeological Services in 2015 in advance of a proposed scheme by Scottish Water. Site 16: Boundary: A turf/stone bank spread 2-2.5m wide and up to 0.7m high comprises the remains of an enclosure. <4>
The additional dyke visible in LiDAR was not seen during the 1999 or 2015 surveys [IS-L 12/02/2026].
