Full Description

A possible hut circle at Cnoc Croit Na Maoile. It is visible as a vague, roughly circular feature in vertical aerial photography and SEPA LiDAR data and is c. 11.5-12m in diameter. <1> <2>

Trial trenching of the feature was undertaken by AOC Archaeology in 2025. The work was carried out as advance works on behalf of Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) in respect to the LT14 Western Isles: Mainland Cable Route. Following the completion of the preliminary contour and site survey, the original trench layout was revised in order to avoid areas of mature trees and dense forestry, ensuring minimal disturbance to existing vegetation. Two trenches were mechanically excavated but no archaeological features or finds were encountered. which suggested the possible hut circle was not archaeological in nature. <3>

NOTE: Trench 1 was placed outside the feature to the west as it is seen in the LiDAR, and Trench 2 was placed inside it. It may, therefore, not be surprising that no features or deposits were encountered as evaluation of some definite earthwork features has also produced no evidence of occupation in the interior [IS-L 30/06/2026].
