Full Description

A walkover survey and desk-based assessment for the National Trust estate at Torridon was carried out by J Wordsworth and J Harden between 1996 and 2002.

This area is characterised by the remains of low stone dykes and stone rickles running NE-SW with the fall of the land, and low clearance heaps. The ground appears particularly poor - perhaps the turf has been stripped from this area, as it appears to have been from above the main road north of the Alligin gorge.

The structure is set against an outcrop of rock so that it only needs three walls (the back wall being the outcrop). The structure which survives to its wellheads and gable-heads, measures c 6.5m long by c3.7m wide and has a south-facing door. Aligned SW-NE with an entrance in its SE wall, it is c6.5m by c4m internally with walls c0.6m thick. Both gables have square vents in their upper parts, but that in the SW gable is blocked. To the rear there is a semi-circular area defined by a dyke ¬ presumably designed to keep stock from eating the roof of the building or from falling through it. <1>

NGR adjusted based on 2009 vertical aerial photographs. <2>

Note; It appears that this building has been surveyed twice in error (TB 5/11/25)
