Full Description

A walkover survey and desk-based assessment for the National Trust estate at Torridon was carried out by J Wordsworth and J Harden.

Torridon Mains consists of a late 18th century two-and-a-half storey dwelling house facing south, a cottage to the west and steading buildings further east by the loch-side. The main part of the steading has recently been converted into a bunkhouse, known as Mol Mor. In 1851 the shepherd steward had been established at the Mains, and by 1861 the Mains and Mol Mor were being used by the farm manager, shepherd, ploughman and herd, a gamekeeper and 2 housekeepers. In 1891 there was only a butler, dairymaid and ploughman living here. There is also a structure marked on the 1837 estate map to the east of the Mains and immediately south of the track to the farm but this is not marked on the 1875 OS map and was not found during this survey of sites. <1>
