Full Description
A field dyke to the northeast of Mound Rock above Loch Fleet. It was noted and recorded by C Dagg in 2017 during a walkover survey undertaken in advance of a proposed forestry scheme on the Sutherland Estate.
Site 1. Boundary dyke: The occasionally indistinct remains of a turf and rubble bank. Its west end meets a rock outcrop, while to the east it continues beyond the evaluation boundary, running down the hill slope towards Shepherd’s Cottage. This has the appearance of an Early Modern boundary and may have been the head dyke of Ironhill. <1>
The dyke Is not shown on the OS 1st Edition map of the area but it is visible on vertical aerial photographs, as is a connecting dyke which runs southeastwards from a point c.240m from the western end of the main dyke. The main dyke's eastern point joins the northwest corner of a large rectangular dyked enclosure, though it is unclear whether they are contemporary. <2> <3>
