Full Description
Water channels, lades running east partly from Loch a' Bhiocair. They were noted and recorded by C Dagg in 2017 during a walkover survey undertaken in advance of a proposed forestry scheme on the Sutherland Estate.
Site 2. Water channels: Running from the possibly artificially enlarged lochan of Loch a’ Bhiocair, which originally drained west, a straight watercourse is cut , in parts deeply, across higher ground to flow east to a small containment pond (site 3 - see MHG64948) This watercourse is joined by a second which runs a distance of approximately 1km from a diversion on a stream which flows naturally west to Strath Fleet. Both are now choked as they cross the low peaty basin. The watercourse flowing from the lochan is named Altan na h-Atha, or ‘burn of the kiln’, presumably a reference to the ultimate destination of the water at Kirkton Farm. <1>
The channels are shown on the OS 1st Edition map and are visible on vertical aerial photographs. <2> <3>
