Full Description

A pond bay to the east of Loch a' Bhiocair. It was noted and recorded by C Dagg in 2017 during a walkover survey undertaken in advance of a proposed forestry scheme on the Sutherland Estate.

Site 3. A dilapidated rubble bank forms a dam to a small containment pond. There is a gap in the centre of the dam for a sluice mechanism, now removed. To the north, a rubble bank extends from the dam, on dry ground, curving west to terminate just west of the modern fence. This is part of the water management to provide power, presumably, to a threshing mill at Kirkton farm. East of this, the stream appears to take a fairly natural course. Two further containment ponds with sluice controls were located downstream. <1>

The site is shown on the OS 1st Edition map and is visible on vertical aerial photographs. <2> <3>
