Full Description

A former settlement/township adjacent to the Allt an Reidhean with associated rig ciltivation, possibly originally known as Glendoemore.

The former settlement consisting of at least six buildings, two enclosures and rig cultivation was visited and recorded by C Dagg during a walkover survey in 2002 in advance of the proposed Glendoe Hydro-Electric Scheme. This may be part of the settlement known as Glendoemore, a placename recorded as a farmstead on the OS 1st Edition map as being located to the northwest at NH 4004 0887 (see MHG23344), but as this was within mature spruce plantation, it was not possible to confirm the existence of any structures there. Features of this settlement were located on both sides of the existing track immediately above the plantation: the main body of the settlement lay on the east bank of the Allt an Reidhean and consisted of four buildings and one rectangular enclosure, with rig cultivation to the south. Between the stream and the track were two buildings and, attached to one of the buildings, a square enclosure. West of the track a turf dyke ran up the hill, and a possible third enclosure had been cut across by the plantation fence. The area of rigs was clearly visible to the east of the track while the possible structure was located on the highest point of the grassy area. There did not appear to be any associated features to the west of the track. <1>

The features as described are visible in vertical aerial photography taken in 2005. However, subsequent aerial photography shows that by 2016 a rough access track had been cut through the enclosure on the west side of the burn and then eastwards between the surviving buildings. The track had become increasingly formalised by 2020 potentially causing more damage. <2> <3> <4>
