Full Description

Remains of a sheep fold at Achadh na h-Eirghe.

Vertical aerial photography shows the remains of a sheep fold on the east side of the Allt na h-Eirighe north of its confluence with the River Loy. There are a series of small stone walled enclosures/compartments which appear to be inwith and integrated into a larger rectangular enclosure. It may have been constructed out of an abandoned farmstead, itself part of a possible large settlement (see MHG30505). The place name 'Achadh na h-Eirighe' translates as 'Field of the Shieling' and the larger settlement may have been a later development or expansion of the older shieling site (see MHG65413), with itself later superceded by at least two sheep folds (see alos MHG30439). <1> <2>
