Full Description
A second archaeological survey of Sandwood Estate in the parish of Eddrachillis was undertaken by ACFA in 2002.
Some 15m to the north of Feature 1, a near-level subrectangular platform 9.5m NE-SW by 5.5m has been cut into the hillside at a height of about 35m OD, and the sides lined to form a horseshoe-shaped sunken enclosure. The lining stonework, standing to a maximum height of 1.3m, consists ofa lower course ofsmll/medium stones and an upper course of much larger blocks, some of which have tumbled into the interior. The open end of the horseshoe is closed by a cross-wall of tumbled small stones (among which is a roofing slate) overlying a course of large basal stones.
Conclusions regarding the age and original function of this structure are problematical. The preferred interpretation is that it is the remains of a medieval building, possibly (in view of its size) having some communal purpose. Alternatively it might be simply an enclosure, in that case possibly for storage. Other explanations, which could involve (much?) earlier dating, are not ruled out. In any event the cross-wall at the southwest end appears to be a relatively late addition. <1>
