Full Description

Remains of a possible small farmstead in Achany Wood, Inveran. It was noted during a survey in 1998 by Wordsworth Archaeological services in advance of a proposed woodland planting scheme. (NOTE: all NGRS supplied in the report are incorrect and have been corrected using comparison between the plan supplied in the report, available aerial photography, historic OS mapping and SEPA/Scottish Gov LiDAR data)

Site 1: NH 5619 9810 (corrected)
Set on a gently sloping terrace are the footings of a rectangular structure 3m by 4m. Immediately to the E of this is a heap of stones measuring 8m long N/S and c4-5m wide. This is probably the remains of a collapsed rectangular building, though no walls were visible. There may be traces of walling 6m to the E of this and 8m to the S but these are ill-defined and may only be the effect of forestry ploughing. The remains are consistent with a small pre-clearance settlement perhaps some 200 years old. Recommendation: This site should be protected during felling and left as an open area with a 20m clearance zone around the structures, as specified in the Forest Authority Guidelines. <1>
