Full Description

A possible farmstead in Achany Wood, Inveran. The features were recorded during a survey in 1998 by Wordsworth Archaeological services in advance of a proposed woodland planting scheme. (NOTE: all site NGRS supplied in the report are incorrect and have been corrected using comparison between the plan supplied in the report, available aerial photography, historic OS mapping and SEPA/Scottish Gov LiDAR data)

Site 5(b): NH 5581 9833 (corrected)
Within an area of Scots pines to the southwest of a group of probably not associated clearance cairns (see MHG654765) are the collapsed remains of a rectangular stone structure perhaps 10m by 4m. Some 20m E of the S edge are the remains of a rounded rectangular stone structure measuring 5m by 3m with its long axis aligned NE/SW. It has been partly disturbed and trees are growing out of the S end. While the clearance cairns are consistent with prehistoric use of the land the structure is more likely to have been in use c200 years ago prior to the clearances. Recommendation: These remains should be protected and together with the cairns left either unplanted or planted with low density shallow rooted trees. <1>

The two possible structures are visible in SEPA/Scottish Giv LiDAR data. <2>
