Full Description

Possible clearance cairns in Achany Wood, Inveran. They were seen and recorded during a survey in 1998 by Wordsworth Archaeological services in advance of a proposed woodland planting scheme. (NOTE: all site NGRS supplied in the report are incorrect and have been corrected using comparison between the plan supplied in the report, available aerial photography, historic OS mapping and SEPA/Scottish Gov LiDAR data)

Site 9: NH 5676 9810 (corrected)
3 probable stone clearance heaps c5m diameter by 0.75m high lie c 100m due west of the centre of the Hydro fenced compound. No other features are visible in the vicinity, though it is unlikely that 3 cairns mark the extent of this field system. They appear similar to the cairns identified at Sites 2 & 5 (see MHG65473 & MHG65475). Recommendation: Ideally these should be preserved during felling and planting operations. It is recognised that the incomplete nature of this feature makes its preservation of a lesser priority. <1>

NOTE: These cairns are not visible in vertical aerial photography [IS-L 13/01/2026].
