Full Description

Remains of a Prehistoric field system, including at least one possible enclosure, in Dirr Wood. Components of the system were recorded by West Coast Archaeological Services in 2015 during a walkover survey in advance of a proposed water main scheme.

Features 21-28: Aligned northwest-southeast and under dense vegetation are the low and ephemeral remains of a series of stone walls spread 1m-1.5m wide and 0.25m-0.5m high. <1>

At least one additional wall line, apparently missed by the surveyor, is visible on vertical aerial photographs and Scottish Gov/SEPA LiDAR data. There are also vague suggestions that at least some of the wall lines may continue to the southeast. <2> <3>

NOTE: All NGRs and GIS depictions for the individual earthworks provided in <1> appear to be c.12m too far south, possibly caused by a GPS error or inaccuracy during the survey [IS-L 12/02/2026].
