Full Description
An archaeological survey, including desk-based assessment and walk-over survey, was conducted in 2000 for the WGS proposal at Cnoc Leamhnachd, Sutherland.
Area 3 measures approximately 200 metres east/west by 80 metres north/south. There are three structures or clusters of
structures visible, representing at least two distinct periods in time.
Structure 2 is a field system, comprising a total of at least 12 clearance cairns. The cairns define a roughly circular area, 60 metres in diameter, which forms the end of the same terrace on which the hut circle is located, approximately 120 metres to the west. The cairns are not substantial and are further hidden by deep heather and peat growth. They are regularly distributed across the area.
The prehistoric structures, the hut circle and the clearance cairns, are covered with deep heather, whereas the rectangular stone-built structure (Structure 3) is surrounded by bracken. Though only a crude indicator, the vegetation type around the individual structures does divide them into two age groups; prehistoric covered with heather, and the more recent structure (probably post AD 1500) surrounded by bracken.<1>
