Full Description
The present road roughly follows a course constructed under the direction of Thomas Telford in 1803 (Bardgett 1990). Parallel to the existing road, a causewayed and wheel-rutted trackway (2 m wide) lies within the survey area on the west side (Site No.10) and is probably part of Telford's original construction. The track is lightly clad in coarse grasses and weeds. Road-metalling, in the form of compacted gravel chips, may be seen intermittently in the surface, though this probably dates to the latest refurbishment of the surface. <1>
