Full Description

The Roy Military Survey map shows Coul House as a rectangular building with two flanking wings aligned roughly east-west within a walled enclosure with a tree-lined avenue or driveway heading south and all set within a rectilinear arrangement of parkland, trees and what appear to be tree-lined avenues (see also MHG65684). Comparison between the Roy map, historic and modern OS mapping, vertical aerial photography and Scottish Gov/SEPA LiDAR data would possibly place the certainly C18 depiction of the house to c.380m to the southeast of the current house (see MHG14110) at the north end of what is now a cultivated field. Vertical aerial photography taken in 2021 appears to show the cropmarks of a rectangle to the north of two parallel lines which may represent the sites of the house and the tree-lined driveway/avenue. <1> <2> <3> <4>
