Full Description

A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.

On gently sloping marshy ground to the west of River Dionard, immediately north of the broch, are two small clearance heaps. These are made up from large boulders and sit within a shallow drainage channel which runs down to the river. The more northerly of the two measures 3 m by 2 m whilst the other is larger at 6 m by 2 m. These features, together with the drainage channel clearly represent a recent attempt to improve and reclaim this area of marshy ground for agricultural purposes. <1>
