Full Description

A large circular feature, possibly a stock enclosure at Braemore near Lairg.

The feature is visible on vertical aerial photography as a large circular feature c. 20m in diameter. It is not shown on any OS mapping. <1> <2>

The site was visited by A Coombs and D Kennedy on 16/07/2021. The site is on the southeast facing slope of Meall a Ghruididh and overlooking the valley of the Grudie Burn to the northeast. The site is within an area of open grassland with two unoccupied houses and two modern stock barns. On the ground the feature lies in rough grazing to the south of a small drain or burn which flows southwest to northeast joining into the Grudie Burn. The feature was immediately visible as a circular stone and turf structure c.18m across internally with walls with a spread of c.1.5m and c.0. 5m high. The wall did not appear to have continuous internal or external faces. The entrance is southeast facing and c.2-3m wide. There is no indication of an outer or inner ditch. The structure does not have the appearance of a henge and does not appear to be a round house being larger in diameter than other round houses in the immediate area. The use and date of the structure was not obvious. <3>
