Full Description

A group of shieling huts and associated structures on the Allt a' Chaoruinn and Allt Buadh. Four small roofed buildings, a rectangular sheepfold and two areas of what appear to be cultivation within an enclosure are shown on the OS 1st Edition map. The 'settlement' is not named. By the time of the second edition the small buildings had disappeared and a new roofed bulding had been erected at the north end of the aforementioned enclosure. The sheepfold may have been out of use and is labelled 'Old Sheepfold'. A circular feature, presumably a replacement sheepfold, is shown to the northwest of the old. The settlement is named 'Alltachorain'. <1> <2>

Additional features are visible on aerial photographs which indiicate that this may previously have been a larger settlement than the OS 1st Edition map otherwise indicates. An east-west aligned building of at least two compartments, though there may be an additonal structure abutting to its north side, measuring 19m x 4m is visible at NGR 247323 795273 and abuttiing its southwest corner is a trapezoidal enclosure measuring c. 27m x 17m which has the Allt a' Chaoruinn as its western side. The 'Old Sheepfold' of the OS 1st ad 2nd Edition maps appears to be larger than shown on the maps and may have been developed out of an older structure. A second rectangular building aligned northeast-southwest is just about visible at NGR 247325 795410 and may measure c.25m x 6m. The enclosure shown on the older OS maps is still visible. A small building shown on the older mapping appears to be more of a small rectangular enclosure at NGR 247237 795309 measuring 11.5m x 9m though there are slight indications of an abutting east-west aligned building measuring c.13m x 3.5m on its west side which appears to be partly overlain by the later circular sheepfold. <3>
