Full Description
The former farmstead of 'Bilster', Caithness. The site may be that labelled 'Belsher' on the Roy Military Survey maps between 'Kirkminster' (possibly the settlement later called 'Kirk') and 'Minster' (presumably the settlement, labelled 'Kilminster' on the OS 1st Edition map and now called 'Killimster'). The most recent rendering of its name (i.e. on the OS 1st edition 6 inch map) would imply a Norse origin but it seems strange for Roy to have mis-named a '-ster' name when he places it between two others. On the OS 1st edition 6 inch map it is shown as two rectangular buildings, possibly partially unroofed, with a third building immediatley to the west and two enclosures, one possibly a garden or vegetable plot, adjoining to the northwest. By the second edition all are unroofed and the site no longer labelled. The core of the site is now within a clearing in a forestry plantation. <1> <2> <3> <4>
