Full Description
Feature 2; Pre-improvement House and Enclosure. This feature is set on a gentle east facing slope below the pathway to Sandwood Bay and 200m from Feature 1. It appears as a low rectangular turf covered bank with only occasional stones showing. The structure is 16m N-S by 11m E-W between bank-tops. At the southern end there is a cross wall 4.5m from the outer wall. The turf banks or walls stand to a height of 0.4m with a spread of 1.5m. There is an opening 1.0m wide into the larger rectangle on the east side 6m from the north east corner, while a further opening 1.0m wide, leading from the larger area into the smaller rectangle, occurs in the cross wall 1.5m from the east side. The feature is interpreted as a house with kale yard and is likely to be a pre-improvement farm associated with an extensive early field system. <1>
