Full Description
Feature 4b; The remains of a sub-rectangular structure 2.9m N-S by 1.5m E-W, with stone and turf walls 0.3m high (maximum) and 0.6m wide. There is an entrance on the east (downslope) side. This structure would ordinarily be interpreted as a shieling-hut, and may indeed have been one, but taken over and used as a main habitation for a year or two. It is suggested that the area is one of essentially temporary agricultural use, with cultivation of marginal land for one or a few years only, as a consequence of over-population, possibly due to or exacerbated by the clearance of households from more fertile land elsewhere.<1>
