Full Description
Feature 5; A rectangular structure 2.4m N-S by 1.7m E-W, lying at the foot of a heather covered slope.The walls are a single stone high, and there is an entrance at the south end of the east wall. There is also a possible out-building or storage area approximately 1.2m E-W by 0.8m N-S, abutting the north wall, extending from the NW corner. This structure would ordinarily be interpreted as a shieling-hut, and may indeed have been one, but taken over and used as a main habitation for a year or two. It is suggested that the area is one of essentially temporary agricultural use, with cultivation of marginal land for one or a few years only, as a consequence of over-population, possibly due to or exacerbated by the clearance of households from more fertile land elsewhere. About 25m to the east of this feature is a section of drystone walling 6m long, lm high and 0.6m wide, aligned approximately N-S.<1><2>
