Full Description
Feature 6; This feature lies 70m N (348° mag.) of a prominent circular sheepfank. It consists of a rectangular stone setting 3.2m N-S by 1.9m E-W, close to a small stream. There is a possible entrance at the SE corner. This structure would ordinarily be interpreted as a shieling-hut, and may indeed have been one, but taken over and used as a main habitation for a year or two. It is suggested that the area is one of essentially temporary agricultural use, with cultivation of marginal land for one or a few years only, as a consequence of over-population, possibly due to or exacerbated by the clearance of households from more fertile land elsewhere. About 25m to the east of this feature is a section of drystone walling 6m long, lm high and 0.6m wide, aligned approximately N-S.<1><2>
