Full Description
A second archaeological survey of Sandwood Estate in the parish of Eddrachillis was undertaken by ACFA in 2002.
Feature 2; Fank; 35m above the sea, looking southeast across Bagh a Phollain to Eilean na h-Aiteig, a large rock outcrop stands some 1.m high and 30m long. Against the southeast edge of it a ruinous sub-rectangular enclosure of boulders demarcates an area 28m by 12m. Within the enclosure a 3-sided drystone structure has been built about 1.5m from the rock edge. The walls stand in places to their original height of 1.7m, but are tumbled in the long wall which measures 7.7m SW-NE. The southwest wall is 4.8m long and the northeast wall 5.8m long. The gaps between the structure and the stone scarp have been entrances and some loose stone seems to indicate they may have been blocked temporarily when the fank was in use. There is a drain-hole 0.5m by 0.5m midway along the northeast wall, with a dressed lintel stone clearly visible. It would seem that the outer boulder walling revets a raised platform area and was probably formed much earlier than the structure itself which is likely to be mid/late l 9thC, for use when working with sheep. <1>
