Full Description
A second archaeological survey of Sandwood Estate in the parish of Eddrachillis was undertaken by ACFA in 2002.
Feature 6.3; Limpet-shell deposit . At the northwest comer of Sandwood Loch the loch shore runs generally N-S along the base of eroding sand dunes, the eroding faces standing up to some 4m above the narrow beach. At the above- mentioned map reference an apparently fairly small deposit of limpet shells was noted within the dune, embedded some 0.3m below the top surface over a horizontal distance of lm and to a thickness of 0.lm. An inspection of the general area for significant shell middens was unproductive. In passing, it was noted that even over the 5 days of the survey, noticeable erosion (order of 0.1-0.15m) of the dune face at the lochside occurred locally, presumably associated with the very wet weather in the weeks preceding the survey and the build up of pore pressure in the sand. <1>
