(NG 581 443) North and South Screapadal: depopulated by 1877.
OS 6"map, Isle of Skye, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1877)
North Screapadal, a depopulated township, comprises some 17 ruined houses. There are 4 small ruined boat-houses on the seashore.
There are lazy-beds in the area especially upon the higher slopes to the west.
These townships were probably depopulated by Mr Rainy of Edinburgh, who bought the island of Raasay in 1846, sending large numbers of the inhabitants abroad, and to Rona (Information from Miss Nicholson, 'Eilean Tigh', Raasay and from Mr Macleod, shoemaker, Clachan, Raasay).
Visited by OS (A S P) 12 June 1961
Fifteen unroofed buildings and a head-dyke are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, Isle of Skye 1881, sheet xxiv). Nineteen unroofed buildings and a head-dyke are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1988).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 18 October 1996
An Archaeological Survey of the townships of North & South Screapadal, with a survey of the surrounding area, on Raasay was undertaken by ACFA in 1998.
Feature 3; House/byre . On the same level as Feature 2, this ruinous sub-rectangular structure measures 13.8 m by an average 3.8m internally with an axis nearly north to south. Its walls average 0.9m in thickness. An internal abutting wall about 0.8m wide divides the structure into two compartments. The northern one is 7.6m by 4m and the other 5m by 3.4m. The south end wall is built on two notably large boulders, 1.6m and 1.4m long and both lm high. The south end of the west wall also has large basal stones. The walls stand to a maximum height of 1.8m in the south and 0.5m in the north. The west wall is 1.1m high internally. An entrance, on the long east wall, 5.0m from the south east comer is 1.1m wide. At the east side in the dividing wall a 0.7m wide entrance into the northern section has been blocked up. There is a difference of 0.75m the ground levels of the two compartments. An external gutter has been created between the slope and most of the west wall to divert surface water from the house. A possible crock slot remains on the cast wall 3m from the north corner and 0.6m above the ground. This has been a house/byre structure. Although no evidence of a drain can be seen it is presumed that the southern section was used as the byre. <1>
