Full Description
This area is named 'Balmeanach' on the OS 1st Edition map and it is possible that it formerly included an area to the southwest (see MHG5746). 'Sartle' or 'Sartil' is the name given to what appears to be a single farmstead within Balmeanach but subsequently 'Balmeanach' appears to have declined in use as a name and 'Sartle' now covers this area of former pre-clearance township. Vertical arerial photography shows extensive areas of former rig and furrow cultivation especially to the south adjacent to the River Brogaiag. Also visible are the remains of individual dispersed farmsteads and earlier fields with broad dykes overlain and crossed by a network of later, narrower dykes. <1> <2> <3>
