(NG 581 443) North and South Screapadal: depopulated by 1877.
OS 6"map, Isle of Skye, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1877)
North Screapadal, a depopulated township, comprises some 17 ruined houses. There are 4 small ruined boat-houses on the seashore.
There are lazy-beds in the area especially upon the higher slopes to the west.
These townships were probably depopulated by Mr Rainy of Edinburgh, who bought the island of Raasay in 1846, sending large numbers of the inhabitants abroad, and to Rona (Information from Miss Nicholson, 'Eilean Tigh', Raasay and from Mr Macleod, shoemaker, Clachan, Raasay).
Visited by OS (A S P) 12 June 1961
Fifteen unroofed buildings and a head-dyke are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, Isle of Skye 1881, sheet xxiv). Nineteen unroofed buildings and a head-dyke are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1988).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 18 October 1996
An Archaeological Survey of the townships of North & South Screapadal, with a survey of the surrounding area, on Raasay was undertaken by ACFA in 1998.
Feature 24; A sub-rectangular dry stone structure lying on a north east to south west axis measures 8.9m by 3.lm. The walls are 0.9m thick with rounded external comers and nearly square internally. The walls are generally ruinous but standing to a maximum 1.3m at the north west and north east comers. There is one entrance, 1.0rn wide, located in the south wall. Faint signs of a cross wall appear just to the east of the doorway, but this may not be original. Beyond the north west wall is a cleared and slightly lowered area, possibly a kitchen garden. It is bounded by a low 0.3m stone wall at its west edge. The general area to the south of the structure may
also have been cleared·for cultivation. There is a substantial grass covered stony mound to the north east of the structure, which appears to be clearance from the immediate area. The structure is considered to be a house. The structure has been reused after primary abandonment, with a lambing pen having been constructed in the south west corner.
