Full Description
(NG 581 443) North and South Screapadal: depopulared by 1877.
OS 6"map, Isle of Skye, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1877)
South Screapadal, separated from North Screapadal by An Leth-allt, comprises some 17 ruined houses.
There are lazy-beds in the area especially upon the higher slopes to the west.
These townships were probably depopulated by Mr Rainy of Edinburgh, who bought the island of Raasay in 1846, sending large numbers of the inhabitants abroad, and to Rona (Information from Miss Nicholson, 'Eilean Tigh', Raasay and from Mr Macleod, shoemaker, Clachan, Raasay). Visited by OS (A S P) 12 June 1961
Twelve unroofed buildings are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, Isle of Skye 1881, sheet xxiv). Sixteen unroofed buildings are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1988).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 18 October 1996
An Archaeological Survey of the townships of North & South Screapadal, with a survey of the surrounding area, on Raasay was undertaken by ACFA in 1998.
Feature 5; House & Byre. A sub-rectangular building measuring 13m x 3.8m lies north to south. The walls are of' dry stone construction, have an inner and outer skin and measure 0.9m thick and 0.9m high at the north gable. They are of good construction. The building is divided into two compartments - the house and the byre. The house occupies the northern half and measures 5.7m x 3.8m. It has an entrance 0.8m wide in the east wall. The byre measures 6.5m x 3.5m and has an entrance 1m wide in the east wall. A partition wall divides the two compartments .This wall, which measures 1m thick, is not bonded to the main walls of the building and there is evidence of this wall having been rebuilt. Within the byre there is evidence of a primary or secondary facing to the partition wall. In the upper west side of the byre are the remains of a raised platform. This consists of a single course of stones. It would appear that this platform was used to stable cattle thus allowing their effluent to drain downhill. There is no evidence of a drain in the south gable. <1>
