Full Description
A Hut circle to the south of the Ullapool River.
13m diameter circular enclosure overlain by longhouse 12m by 5m, including drain. T C Welsh 1992. <1>

215784 895064 Loch Achall 4 Blar Caliscaig AW504: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and C Boyd in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. The area around Loch Achall shows evidence of multi period farming and is currently well grazed by sheep. This circular stone structure sits on on a level platform dug into and built out from a gentle north facing slope. To the north of the structure is a flattish platform about 3m wide. From the site views are panoramic inland. The ground cover of the surrounding landscape is a mixture of heather and grass. Inside the structure the cover is mainly grass with some heather and rushes. The ring bank is heather covered. The HC is 100m from a stream, 200m from a river and 500m from Loch Achall. Average inner diameter is 12.5m, outer diameter is 15.45m. The double skinned wall is 1.6m thick with maximum height 0.4m. The possible entrance faces east with passage length 1.8m. Inside the HC are the footings of a possible longhouse, a rectangular two roomed structure with dimensions 3m x 10m. AW504 is distant 500m from AW501 (see MHG6329), 200m from AW502 (see MHG59280) and 700m from AW505 (see MHG6327). These HCs may be associated. <3> <4>
