Full Description
A hut circle at Allt Nan Carnan. One of two (A) located by the OS in this location. See MHG57757 for 'B'.
Two circular stone-walled huts.
'A' measures 8.5m diameter between wall centres spread to 2m with entrance in SE.
'B' is in a poor state of preservation, measuring approximately 8.5m diameter between wall centres. The entrance is not evident.
To N of 'B' are traces of a wall, but otherwise there are no indications of contemporary cultivation.
Surveyed at 1/10,000. Visited by OS (J M) 30 May 1974.
189337 841249 Allt Nan Carnan 2 PS009: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and K Clarke in 2009 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. The circular HC sits on a natural knoll in an undulating landscape. Average interior diameter is 5m, exterior diameter 9.8m. Wall construction unclear, wall width 1.8m,no height measurable. No stones were visible and the structure is submerged by heather, grass, and moss. A second hut with a very similar grid reference was originally recorded in HER records (May 1974), but this was not located in March 2009. This HC would also be associated with the cluster PS010 (750m - see MHG7654), PS007 (900m - see MHG57756), PS008 (800m - see MHG7655). <1> <2>
