Full Description

Carn Chaorain (NAT.) OS 6"map, 2nd ed., Ross and Cromarty, (1905)

'Carn Chaorain', a large heap of stone on road leading from Strathconon to Glencarron, is 'the supposed place of burial of a Scandinavian chief of that name'. The name means 'Cuaran's Cairn.' Name Book 1875

Carn Chaorain, a heap of stone c.8m in diameter and 2m high, situated in a hollow on N side of the old road. The tradition that it is the burial place of a Scandinavian king is not known locally and is probably erroneous, although the name is verified (Mr Campbell, Carnoch, Strathconan, Ross and Cromarty). According to Mr. Campbell, it marks the spot where a "Skyeman was killed during the cattle droving". Visited by OS (N K B) 21 October 1966
