Full Description

A hut circle at Allt Loch an Druim Fearna near Gairloch.

Hut circle, 8m in diameter, stone walls, incorporating some large upright stones. <1>

182836 871064 An Druim Fearna 4 - Achadh Na Clais AMC121: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. The circular stone structure sits in a flattish area on a broad ridge, and is built up from ground level. The structure is in fair condition but is engulfed by bracken and moss. The roundhouse seems to be adjacent to a field enclosure, not within it as recorded by R Wentworth. It is sited 200m from a stream. Average inner diameter is 6.8m, outer diameter is 9.7m. The double skinned wall is 1.5m thick with maximum height 0.45m. The entrance faces East with internal width 1.7m and external width 1.9m. The entrance has one very extended terminal to North, giving a passage length of 4.5m, and a shorter extended terminal to South. There are several orthostats in the walling. The whole area encompassing AMC118 (see MHG8293), 120 (see MHG57286), 119 (see MHG57287) and 121 shows evidence of cultivation with disturbed ground, clearance cairns and field boundaries. AMC120 is 100m distant, AMC119 is 130m distant, AMC118 is 1000m distant. <2> <3>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

Note: NGR adjusted to possible position as seen on 2009 vertical APs [IS-L 07/06/2017].
