Full Description
NH56SW 24 5120 6112
The fragmentary remains of this deserted farm of clay-mortar construction are visible in a modern clearance-heap.
RCAHMS 1979, visited September 1978.
An archaeological evaluation was conducted by Dagg. C, of an area of proposed shelter belt planting and native woodland regeneration on croft land at heights of Fodderty, Strathpeffer.
Described on the SMR as being obscured by a modern clearance heap. There are two levelled platforms but no remains of buildings at this location (Photo no. 11). The local tradition is that this farmstead was completely demolished after the tenant was evicted. This is an unlikely occurrence, as no other homes of evicted tenants are known to have been so completely demolished: the removal of the roof beams was considered adequate to deter any attempts at return. The map of the Strathpeffer agricultural landscape drawn up around 1963 indicates that this was the only inhabited croft house within the present survey area, which may be an error. <1>
