Full Description
NH56SW 22 5077 6113
A deserted farmhouse of clay-mortar construction with what may be an associated kiln-barn.
RCAHMS 1979, visited September 1978.
One partially roofed and one unroofed building are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ross-shire and Cromartyshire 1881, sheet lxxvi). One unroofed building of two comopartments is shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10560 map (1969).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 1 March 1996
An archaeological evaluation was conducted by Dagg. C, of an area of proposed shelter belt planting and native woodland regeneration on croft land at heights of Fodderty, Strathpeffer.
One partially roofed and one unroofed building recorded on the 1st edition OS map. This is locally referred to as the ‘cobbler’s’ and may be the ruin described eloquently by MacDonald: ‘..the stones that used to form the walls of Rory the shoemaker’s workshop. It would be just here by the ingleneuk where Rory used to sit on a backless oak chair cutting out the uppers for the eight shoemakers that sat in two rows down the room…’ (Echoes of the Glen, chapter XXXll) The main building, aligned NE-SW, measures approximately 24m in total, consists of two large compartments, with a byre attached to the east gable and a small annexe to the west. The size of the two main compartments suggests the possibility of a cottage and a workshop. In front of this building, aligned N-S is a smaller building, 5.5m in length which, although not obviously so, must be the kiln barn recorded on the SMR. This is the only kiln barn recorded among all six farmsteads. (Photo no.
5) from the NW corner of this structure a turf bank runs west to where a well is recorded on the 1st edition OS map, although this was not located. The OS map indicates the main building as roofed in 1875, but the kiln barn structure as unroofed. <1>
