Full Description

A hut circle in Gleann Udalain.

At NG 8573 2815 is a stone-walled circular hut measuring 9.0m in overall diameter. The outer face is visible for much of the periphery. The N arc is partially destroyed and no entrance is evident. There is so much debris around the inside of the wall that it seems likely to have been occupied at a later date. Surveyed at 1/10 000. Visited by OS (J M) 5 June 1974.

185740 828139 Glen Udelain 2 JDG003: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and M Wildgoose in 2009 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular HC is at elevation 200m, at the foot of a W facing slope. Its position is similar to that of Glen Udelain 2 which lies 600m to N. Average inner diameter of walls is 5.3m, outer diameter 8.8m, thickness of double skinned walls 1.7m. The outer wall is visible. Inside there is much tumble. The wider landscape contains fragmentary earlier boundaries, visible from stones pointing through the peat. There is a wall of big stones at NG85732 28159, 10m downslope of HC. Also a medieval turf dyke, a boundary wall with stone on N face, 50m to N along burn. <1> <2>
