Full Description
Centred on NC 961 189 is a settlement of three stone-walled hut circles (A-C) within a contemporary field system. The situation is the upper slopes of a hillside open to the S.
'A' is 13.0m internal diameter within a much reduced wall, best-defined in the S half, where an outer facing of contiguous slabs on edge is visible; elsewhere it merely survives as a 1.5m spread of overgrown rubble. An entrance, from the SE, has an edging stone in situ in the S side.
'B', set into the slope is about 11.0m NW-SE by 9.5m within a low, peat-covered wall barely discernible in the NE half, and elsewhere spread to circa 3.0m. An entrance was from the SE quarter where there has been mutilation. The hut interior is divided by a curving bank of peat, with some stone protruding, enclosing a roughly oval area within the SE half.
'C' of comparatively lighter build to the other huts, is 6.0m E-W by 5.0m within a wall much reduced in the E segment, and elsewhere remaining as intermittent inner facing slabs backed by a low spread of rubble. An entrance cannot be ascertained.
The associated agriculture is marked by an even density of stone clearance heaps, some linear stone clearance and occasional lynchets. No measurable field plots could be ascertained.
Surveyed at 1:10,560.
Visited by OS (J M) 13 May 1976.
