The airfield takes its name from site of a battle mentioned in the Orkneyinga Saga. One of least known wartime airfields, construction of Skitten began early in 1940. The runways were extended during 1942. One runway was further extended to 1400yds in 1943 as airfield had been designated as a reserve base for Bomber Command. The airfield closed sometime after last squadron departed in 1944.
Today, runways are badly deteriorated, but at one time there were eight Blisters and a single Bellman hangar, along with seven dispersal pens and the watch tower.
