EHG126 - Walkover survey - Leanachan Forest
Technique(s)

Date
Feb 1999
Description
A rapid assessment of the archaeological potential was conducted for the site of the proposed Lochaber Centre, Leanachan Forest, Fort William. Such an assessment was a condition of the consent for this development laid down by the Planning Department, Highland Council. However this condition had been ignored and development of the site had already started. The archaeological assessment was carried out at the earliest opportunity, meaning a detailed deskbound study was not feasible. The survey was undertaken in extremely squally conditions in blustery showers. However this is not thought to have affected the survey, as the ground had already been severely disturbed by machining. The extent of machining was such that little of the original topography was now visible, which prevented the archaeological potential of this area being fully established. <1>
