Description
An initial desk-bound assessment was made of previously recorded information held by Highland Council's Archaeology and Archive Services. Also examined was 'The Lairg Project 1988-1996', 'The Evolution of an Archaeological Landscape in Northern Scotland, edited by RPJ McCullagh & R Tipping, AOC Monograph 3, 1998'. Following this desk-bound survey, a rapid walk-over archaeological survey was carried out. This was carried out on the 1st December 1999 in cold windy conditions with occasional sleet showers. Survey was handicapped by the existing vegetation, which included long heather up to 0.5m high in both areas, and by vigorough natural birch regeneration in Area 1 beside the River Shin. While it was not possible to walk all of the areas in the time available, it was felt that sufficient of both areas was walked to gain an understanding of their archaeological history and importance. <1>
