EHG470 - Excavation - Balloan Park

Trial trenching was carried out under the direction of J Wordswirth in 1990 on the position of a circular enclosure identified by aerial photography at Balloan, Inverness in advance of a propoewd housing development. The fieldwork revealed that an extensive settlement, dating probably from the Late Bronze Age to the Middle Iron Age, lay to the north and east of the palisaded enclosure. Three trial trenches to the east and southeast, funded by Highland Region Roads along the line of the proposed Inverness southern distributor road, also revealed traces of the same settlement (see also EHG686). Two radiocarbon dates from features in Trench III were obtained. <1> <2> The excavation assemblage from the site was allocated to Inverness Museum, listed under Acc. No. 2004.012.
