EHG5782 - Building assessment and interpretation - Fairburn Tower, Muir of Ord
Technique(s)
Organisation
Addyman Archaeology
Date
March 2017
Description
An archaeological assessment and architectural analysis was carried out by Addyman Archaeology in 2017 of Fairburn Tower, located on the Fairburn Estate, about 3.5km to the north-west of Muir of Ord. The assessment, which included the tower, the ancillary range on its west side, and the surrounding site, was intended to inform the conservation decision-making process in advance of repair and rehabilitation of the tower by The Landmark Trust. A general recommendation was that at as early a stage as possible the site be more systematically recorded and investigated as necessary, and that this data be made available for the development of informed architectural schemes for the site. It was also generally recommended (and will likely be conditioned) that clearance and repair works be archaeologically monitored and the records of the site updated accordingly – both of the standing structure and any associated groundworks. <1>
