Full Description
On the E bank of the Allt Eriboll is a 'U' or wedge-shaped structure with the bottom of the 'U' by the burn. The arms are of dry-stone walling about 2 ft 6 in thick and of double-faced construction. The W arm is about 15 ft long and the E arm 14 ft 6 in long along the inside edges. The internal breadth at the narrow S end is 5 ft 9 in, and at the N end 18 ft.
Letter from K Reid to Ordnance Survey, 25 September 1978.
A wedge-shaped structure, as described by Reid. Probably modern but purpose is uncertain.
Visited by OS (NKB) 8 November 1978.
A rapid coastal zone assessment survey was conducted by GUARD in the Autumn of 1997 commissioned by Historic Scotland from the Viking and Early Settlement Archaeological Research Project based at the University of Glasgow.
This site is supposedly on the east side of Alit Eriboll. It is described in the NMRS from K Reid's information, and was visited by OS (NKB) on 8 November 1978. No sign of the U-shaped enclosure as described by the NMRS at the indicated grid reference or along the burn up to 200 m above the water's edge, could be found. Scattered stones may have represented the eroded remains of the site over an area of 9 m by 4 m, however this was unconvincing. <1>
Note: Site not visible on aerial photographs so location based on grid coordinates. (TB 1/6/26)
