Full Description
Unlike Claggersnich, this farm has not been substantially developed since the 1st OS edition survey. The irregular enclosure dykes shown on Fig 3 can still be traced on the ground. Additional stretches, not illustrated on the 1875 survey, can be traced to the north west of the farm as shown on Fig 17(ii). Though heavily overgrown with birch regeneration, this forms a distinct harrier for the stone dumps at the edge of the fields.
The irregularity of the wall lines and the number of roofed dwellings shown in contrast to Claggersnich demonstrates that this was an earlier joint stock farm, commonly known as a fermtoun. This is an important survival. Most of the earlier enclosures and some of the sites of the earlier structures still survive.
Unfortunately the homogeneity of this fermtoun has been compromised by the more recent developments. These include the construction of a silage pit at the south east at cNJ 0920 2745 and the conversion of surviving/modern buildings at NJ 0905 2755 to holiday homes. The latter lie outside the present farm and therefore cannot not be part of the present ESA management plan. More recently the erection of an electricity pole has caused disturbance in the north east and there has been a small amount of field clearance stones being dumped within the main enclosure as well as a large dump of redundant wire netting placed at cNJ 0907 2761. See Fig 17(i)
About 6 rowan are present, especially on the south and east causing a little damage to some of the enclosure walls. These were possibly deliberately planted here for folklore reasons.
The simple limekiln and enclosure at NJ 0910 2725, (see MHG50132) shown with roofed dwelling in 1868-1871 were presumably part of the same complex, though they lie outside the present farm boundary.
At NJ 0888 2765 an a spread of large stones 7m by 4m aligned ESE/NNW is thought to be the remains of another building on this farm. It lies 8m north of the old field dyke, 42m south of the modern wire fence and 13m east of the modern track. <1><2>
