Date

March 1996

Description

An archaeological walkover survey was undertaken by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996 at Claggersnich Farm, Cromdale, as part of a pilot study into the feasability of using such surveys for the management of the archaeology. This pilot study had been commissioned by historic Scotland and was concentrated in the Cairngorm Straths Environmentally Sensitive Area where active management proposals were already being drawn up to manage the historic and natural landscapes. The outcome of the survey was to be both a record of the surviving archaeological remains and a discussion of proposals to preserve these remains. After an initial desk-based survey was examined in the field on the 6th March and on the 17th March. The survey also included an examination of the area immediately to the east of the present farm boundary as this formed part of the former settlement at Fuaranbuie and was also utilised as grazing by Claggersnich Farm. It lay outside the area of the ESA agreement and the information was included because it helped explain the archaeology within the modem farm boundary. Summary descriptions and photographs were taken of all archaeological features as listed in the gazetteer. The survey conditions were generally dry and clear, though in places strong heather growth obscured the surviving features. <1>
