Full Description

An archaeological walkover survey was undertaken by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996 at Claggersnich Farm, Cromdale.

First shown on Roy's Map of cl750 as Clagisnach, no trace of the early farm now survives. The site of the original farm is not known, though it is presumed to lie on the site of the present one. Both the farm house and the steading have been altered since the 1868-71 OS survey. The site of the house shown at NJ 0905 2812 is now under plantation.

The partially rebuilt dyke running approximately E/W to the South of the farm was presumably the boundary between this farm and Ballachule. The other dykes on the farm are ruinous being largely removed or sealed by field clearance stones. See fig 9(i)
Apart from massive clearance cairns as marked on the OS map, the majority of the stones have been dumped to the east on the ground sloping down to the Alt na h-Eirigh. These stone dumps have obscured any early features that may have survived in this less cultivated area. However the boggy terrain makes it unlikely that there were ever any significant remains in this area. <1>
