Full Description
An archaeological walkover survey was undertaken by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1996 at Claggersnich Farm, Cromdale,
Under thick heather is an area of clearance cairns c300m by 100m. Its northern extent is defined by the modern forestry and its southern probably by the OS 1st edition road to Corshellach. Its west edge is a natural terrace in front of a more boggy area. The eastern edge disappears into the area of Corshellach and may originally have extended up the hill to link with site 4. The extent is shown on Fig 2. The cairns average 4m diameter by 0.5m high composed of rounded stones mostly O. lm-0.15m in diameter. Dating these cairns was not possible as they may either be a relic of prehistoric cultivation or the residue from ground clearance when these crofts were established in the late 18th/early I9th centuries. The density of settlement further up the hill would make it surprising if these fields were not cultivated. On the other hand nothing was shown here or at the other two clearance cairn sites on the 1868-71 OS survey. See Fig 9(ii). <1> <2>
